Asking the right questions both to your mentor or yourself is definitely a key I have struggled with. The to do or how to is easy to find. The journey of application from the thought process of those you seek to be like or achieve like success: is priceless.

I’ve been very fortunate to make business relationships with all sorts of different people outside my practice through Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, and other local meet-ups where folks share with me the things they’re doing. Some ideas are interesting…. others I wouldn’t give a second thought to, or even touch with a ten-foot-pole.
The one thing I’ve found in common though, leaders have the dual responsibility of accepting and managing change for themselves, and also of helping others deal with the challenges of change… and this is where the “mechanics of thinking” comes in, and the learned skill set so important for creative problem solving. Here are a few important guideposts I use as simple reminders regarding change, but more importantly… the change in the way I think… a.k.a “What questions should I be asking myself today… and how do I learn it from others?”
-If change is inevitable, how long does it take to get over it, and stay over it?
-How do I develop a relevant vision for successful change, and who are the people I include?
-How am I building, and what am I doing about adding new skill sets?
-Where do I find the courage to transform?
-How do I approach difficult conversations [with myself]?
-Am I creating opportunities to associate with positive people?
-Am I consistently tracking the progress, and how?
-What distractions am I allowing, and how do I neutralize them?
-How do I measure short-term failure, and how does it affect me?
-If I find myself procrastinating… what’s the real reason?
-How often do I reward myself and celebrate success?
Sometimes I ask myself only one or two of these questions, because I could waste the whole day coming up with new ones. Other times I substitute “you” for “I” when talking to others. At the end of the day the most important question I ask, “What activities today had the most effective results?” And that’s how I change the way I think… because I learn by doing. ###

Or, as the adage goes, the beatings will continue until morale improves!
Uggh you modeled that whiney little nasal voice that people that are afraid to stand on their own two feet use when they’d rather you just carried them. There is absolutely nothing becoming of that behavior or posturing from a person that inspires a leader to want to make an effort on their behalf.
Leaders are happy to guide, educate, and give perspective, but a leader that is building and caring for a team does not have time to rescue missions for people that arent willing to get into action and think for themselves too.
Infact, I’ve learned that while sometimes rescue missions are needed, some times the drowning person can pull a leader under by tapping out resources that the team badly needs. Some times its the real strength of the leader to stand and protect the team, the majority and know they cant save everyone. Brutal but true.

THAT’S the ONE thing to ask… and it’s “NOT what to do”
It’s about time someone told ‘em.
I watched this video last night, and at first I was a little confused. How can I not ask how when I am in unfamiliar waters and don’t know how to succeed? But then I left the concept within my thoughts and by today when I saw your tweet for comments it became clear to me. I don’t want someone telling me HOW, that’s what I do when I work for someone else. I want to know the steps to succeeding, to losing that job for someone else because my own business sustains me and my daughter in a lifestyle a bit better than current day-to-day struggles. I don’t want someone else telling me how really. What I need is guidance, I need to know steps needed to reach my goals, suggestions that my current experience levle is not wise enough to come up with. This is the difference between a coach/mentor I want and the boss I already work for.
