A truth in home business prospecting, which has been proven over and over again…

People don’t join programs. People join people.

Sure, every once in a while a program will run an insane special, and jam a bunch of people into it. But they never stay for long.

Or another expression that turns out to be true…

“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

How does this manifest in the way we prospect, in the way we talk with our prospects? Or for that matter, in the way we talk with anyone, prospect or otherwise?

We ask questions. Lots of questions.

We ask good questions. If we’re using a prospecting system, or even a script, it has lots of good, open ended questions. The kind of questions that get people thinking, feeling, opening up their imaginations. Laying bear their fears and frustrations.

And of course the system allows for us to be genuine, to be people who can respond to the answers with good, strong follow up questions. The kinds of questions that challenge people, and make them feel safe in answering honestly.

I learned quite a bit about prospecting with questions by reading The Greatest Networker In The World, by John Milton Fogg. If you haven’t read it, do yourself a favor and pick it up. It’s a magnificent story.

I also learned a lot about prospecting with questions by listening to people who were awful at prospecting. They plowed ahead with their “presentation” without any idea if what they had was right for me. They were too insecure or nervous to deviate from their “script.”

Or they asked questions in a way that told me they were completely uninterested in what the answers were. It wasn’t a conversation. It was waiting for me to stop talking so they could find a way to fit their opportunity into the conversation.

Total turn off.

Now it’s true that what you say about your home business opportunity is important. At the end of the questions, there has to be substance. The company has to be strong. The products or services have to be relevant. The marketing plan has to be fair. And it has to be presented in a clear, professional way (which is why the best presentations are made by an automated system).

The statements are important. But you’ll never get to them unless you learn to ask good questions.

Ask them with empathy, sincerity and interest.

Let the answers take you to the next questions, and the right statements.



How To Get People To Your MLM Presentations



Most people in Network Marketing have NO IDEA how to promote so they constantly struggle with getting people into presentations, onto calls, webinars and into events.

Facts Tell…Stories Sell



One of the first things I learned in my home business career.

Facts tell. Stories sell.

At first I didn’t like that phrase.  It made me feel like I was trying to hide something.  That I was manipulating the truth.

Then I realized that was more about my insecurity than anything else.

Facts make us feel safe.  We can always go back to knowing how much Vitamin B 12 there is in this pill, or how much protein there is in this shake.  We can always tell you how much you’ll save with this vacation plan.

Problem is, that information doesn’t stir the emotion in people. It might make us feel like we’re standing on solid ground.  But it doesn’t shake up the person or people we’re dealing with.

It’s simple.  Think back to what got you started in whatever company you’re in.  Yes, you probably sat down, crunched numbers, did a careful analysis of the products, the marketing plan, etc.  You probably had a talk with your significant other about whether or not this was the right thing.

But what brought you to the point where all those things happened was the EMOTION behind the stories.  The testimonials.  The results.  The energy of the people who crossed the stage, or got on camera.

The tears of joy from that person who lost fifty pounds.  Or who was able to throw away their asthma inhaler. Or who could afford to send their daughter to college. Or who finally got to take their family on vacation. Or who was able to get his wife a proper wedding ring after 20 years of marriage.

See?  You’re instantly putting yourself into those situations.  You’re imagination is going, and I’m not even prospecting you on a product or business opportunity!

It’s just who we are.  Advertisers know this.  It’s why they don’t recite all the facts about their products.  They show you the emotion of the people using them.  They’re showing you people with a problem, and how the product or service solved it.

Then they use the facts to validate it.  But the facts aren’t the star of the show.  The EMOTIONS are.

It’s OK to use emotion to promote what you do.  Just as long as you tell the truth and stay in integrity.

Emotion is what drives us.  Seeing people who have what we want and showing them how they can do the same thing is how we get most of the good things we have.

Respect the facts. They are your friend.

But if you want to share your business with others in a meaningful way, lead with the stories.

How To Recruit For Your MLM: Treat It LIke A Business



Get a picture of a lot of what passes for home business prospecting. A bunch of advertisements that promise “$500 to $2000 a month part time, $5000 plus full time.” Or join “the hottest home business group – best pay plan, turnkey system, simple and easy.” That, and lots of other colorful statements promoting home businesses.

Now try and imagine that same kind of advertising being used to recruit people into a Fortune 500 company. Can you imagine Microsoft or Apple bragging about how they’re the hottest new kid on the block company?

Can you imagine IBM or Exxon Mobil looking for executives, engineers, sales professionals, telling them they have “the best pay plan, turnkey system, simple and easy?”

They wouldn’t. Because they’re serious companies. They take their business seriously. They want quality people who will work hard, make a commitment to learning and being productive, not to mention great team players who will give honest feedback to their supervisors.

And as a result, they get serious people to work for them. They come up with great products. They figure out what customers want, and create products and services to bring to them. They make plenty of mistakes, but have processes in place to identify them and fix them.

And even though we don’t always believe this, they do NOT operate on greed. No company that sticks around for the long term does. Don’t believe it? Think Enron.

You can see the exact same thing happening in the home business world.

Now it’s true that anyone can be successful in network marketing or affiliate or Internet marketing. But that doesn’t mean EVERYONE will.

It means the ones who succeed will start from wherever they are. They’ll learn lots of new stuff. They’ll work hard. They’ll build their own personal qualities. They’ll become more attractive. They’ll commit to providing value and service.

It’s not limited to people with a certain degree. But it is limited to people with the skills, attitudes and behaviors of success.

Putting out advertisements and content that attract people without skills, or the will to get them will get you just that.

You’ll get people who aren’t willing to invest in their business or themselves. They won’t pay start up costs. They’ll want to be spoon fed every step of the way. They’ll get frustrated easily and quickly. And they’ll quit when the money doesn’t fall into their lap in the first week.

Don’t blame them. They’re playing a game you invited them to play.

The most successful home business builders cast a wide net. They invite everyone to take a look at what they have.

But they don’t pretend it’s going to be easy. They screen out the unqualified by telling the truth. And they have high standards for people they choose to sponsor.

And they work with the qualified. They build depth and strength.

And they succeed. Like the best companies do.

Check out your recruiting strategy. Is it appealing to the worst instincts in us?

Or are you projecting an energy of challenge, commitment, integrity and success?

And which kind of organization do you want to be in charge of?
